Because I don’t have the time to read all of the fuel pump talk on this page. My question may have already been answered. When my fuel level goes below 1/8 of a tank some kind of pump starts to whine. It’s actually very loud and draws attention. After I fill my tank up it continues for a few mins then returns to normal. Any ideas?
Have the low pressure pump tested. Cycle your key on and off about 10 times too just to be sure all the air is purged out. Make sure that fuel filters are installed correctly. Drain the DFCM.
Now, read every page of fuel pump hysteria. Pay your dues!
I don't let it go under a half tank and use the same Shell station and same pump. I don't trust winter blends of diesel anymore so I play it safe and use some cetane boost every other fill.
I don't let mine get below 1/4 tank and it rarely gets that low, only on an extended highway trip. Normally I'm fueling up before it even hits 1/2 tank and I don't like to put her to bed on anything but a full tummy.
The noise from the pump that the OP heard was likely air getting into the system, or "sucking fumes" as I put in my previous post.
I usually run mine down pretty far, I actually pumped 24.3 gallons today. Normally it is between 21-23 required to fill er up. Never heard a noise and I also like to run it down to less than 24 miles to empty so that I keep the tank clean and make the filters do their job. I dunno if it matters but I like to think that I am getting close to the bottom of the tank where trash and water would be and removing it with the filters rather than allowing it to build up.

Well I drive around 150 miles a day so I run it low to avoid filling up every other day. Its always made the noise. Im at 31k miles and had the flliters changed at 25k.
This is a little off topic but here goes anyway. I supposedly have a 26 gallon tank. I too have a tendency to run it down fairly low. MTE may say less than 15 and when I fill up I can only put in 24 gallons at the most. Why is that and where is the other 2 gallons. Possibly in the filters and the fuel lines? Any thoughts. Thanks, Mark
You do not want to suck air so I think the computer is programmed to scare you and derate the engine to help prevent damage while there is a gallon or two remaining.
The simple thing to do is to keep the tank full and not worry.
Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I think I experienced the same issue the OP had. I was running my tank down becuase I was getting the Titan tank installed. I was down to a gallon or two in the tank and the truck started making the whining noise that was noticable in the cab w/ radio off and very noticable when I opened the hood. At that point I was already at a gas station because I realized I need a few more gals to get home. After adding the fuel and driving for a bit, the noise stopped and hasn't come back.
