In the process of doing an engine swap in my 1987 F150 pickup I could not get one of the starter bolts out. The previous owner had the bolt head all rounded off and the only thing I could do was to grind the head off and now the stud is sticking out of the tranny about 1 1/2 inches. I have tried spraying it with wd 40, pb blaster, and cannot get it to move. Does anyone have any ideas on what I might be able to do to get it out???? I know I can grind it flush and drill it out, but drilling it straight and trying to get an ez out in there would be tough. Would heating it up, hurt the casting of the tranny??? Please help!!!!
Try using a stud remover. It's a tool that has a hole in it they you put over the stud (broken bolt in this case). You use a 1/2 inch square drive to turn the tool. It grabs the stud and unscrews it. It's great for what you described.
snap on sells the stud removers, they're sort of like an inverted ezout. they work pretty good, but if one of them won't do it, weld a nut on what's left and give it hell
Could carefully heat the transmission case.I have the exact same problem on my 93. I broke it off putting a starter in. There is enough there to locate the starter on. I left it alone and even though I've had to change starters, I haven't had a problem with it in three years.
Heat often helps with this type of problem. A cheap propane torch is a fairly gentle heat that shouldn't harm anything - I think it maxes out at 1100 F., and of course the work piece need not be heated tha much. If you get the female part up around 300F (ie., well above boiling temperature) while avoiding heating the male part (as best you can), it will probably come right out with vise-grips. Have them preset to the right grip and ready at hand - or put them on ahead of time. If you have cleaned the parts well first, you won't even get much smoke.
