finally okay theres what looks like a dimple but its more of a dent , maybe this was from a grenada? I cant fit a socket on the two lower bolts that connect the pumpkin to the housing according to that kevinstang site that would make it a 9? but what gets me is the case doesnot have the hump ,it is round with NO file plug in the back of case so does anyone have any ideas ?

can see the the picture..

if u edit your post, and change the text from link to then the pic will show without having to be clicked on

the mountain/sun icon in the advanced editor will do that for you..
if u just use the quick post window at the bottom of the screen, then YOU have to add the [img]... otherwise it will turn into a link that you have to click on.
here is your pic

that to me looks like a 8.5 inch (not the 8.8 modern disc brake in something like an explorer)... they look almost identical to a 9", but just not quite.... is there a tag on one of the bolts, give us some pics of the front as the number of ribs, etc will tell more (that info is in the kevin stang link in post #3 too)

the picture above looks like the 9 to me but the housing is just different than the ones on the site ribs look like the 9 dont they? theres a very slight bulge on the backside but you can barely see it and the drain plug is under the housing not on the rearside of it? and theres only one dimple in the back not two maybe its an actual dent from hitting something I cant really tell. and there is no tag on it the inside of the case has c7a-w-e which should be the standard case

based on the scale (guessing from bolts u joint, that would be a 9" er to me). I saw a 8.5 in a ?granada? and another on a pinto in the junkyard and they have all the right look, but the size is off... side by side it is obvious.
is it a 5 on 5.5 bolt spacing?

Ford made 9" for a lot of lot of years, every so often you find slight variation - dimple more or less pronounced, etc. Mine has a drain plug, but that's not from the factory - that's courtesy of the EPA.

block one "wheel" so it wont turn and and count the ratio - either that or open it up (if you are super careful you can get it to seal just as good as original) and count the teeth on the ring and pinion - see what you got.

Cheaper (west of the miss, not in Cali) junkyards are $100 + tax for the whole enchilada, brakes, rear end, all it... so for $50 you got a good deal.

Note, Ford made 9" rated at 3500# and all the way down to "unrated" - I think you just have a little lighter rating version is all (hence the tubes look a little smaller).
