I am also thinking about going to a flowmaster muffler, how loud are they compared to a stock muffler? This would be on an 88 F250 4X4 460. Are the stock mufflers on these pretty restrictive? At 80K miles? L8TR
Stock is quiet, which also means restriction. Flow masters are average in noise(not as loud as a blue bottle or such) they give a deep throutie sound, and will be less restrictive. I got a set on my Mustang, a very nice sound.
If you're not looking for a really loud muffler, Edelbrock RPM series mufflers are great. They are a little louder and much deeper sounding than stock, but are not so loud as to cause any problems inside the cab. They also flow very well. I put one on my '85 Bronco with the 351 and loved the sound and performance.
I have dual exhaust on my 1994 460 pickup, with Flowmasters, and it is LOUD.I also have Flowmasters&duals on my 1990 302 Bronco, and it's also loud. You can hear both trucks before you can see them.....everybody in my neighborhood knows when I'm coming home from work.:7
Check out the tech article of installing a flowmaster american thunder kit (link on the right). Also, in the exhaust forum i wrote a post of the difference between a 40 series and 50 series flowmaster muffler.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .
Thats it for now, saving for a stang. Check out my Gallery for a look-see.
I also have a Flowmaster series 40 on my 1994 460 reg cab. I have it dumped right past the front edge of bed. As others have said, the neighbors know when I am home. Can't beat the sound of that big block starting up with an authoritative boom. Inside the truck, the noise can drone around 1700 -2000 rpm, but it makes up for it when you stomp the volume pedal!
