I see in your other post you have a 6.9L. This is the 99-03 7.3L forum.
If you have a 7.3L here is my response:
I am not sure what you are doing to lose the prime. The fuel filter wouldn't be effected if you do lose the prime.
The fuel pump sucks fuel from the tank. This is really the only prime that there is. If your truck is routinely having this issue, you should perform the maintenance on the truck and fix the issue with the leak. The problem will more than likely lie within the tank, but could also be a QD fitting on the tank or the pump too.
The only thing you should have to do with the truck is turn the key on and off a few times. This will charge the fuel bowl and push the air out back to the tank.
I agree with the previous posted but, I put one on my 6.2 liter chev years ago. It was a work truck and would prime the engine when someone ran out of fuel. Thats what there for to force fuel back threw the injectors to start.
