Today I was thinking about the times I came extremely close to death but didn't actually die. Whether by my own fault or being in the wrong place at the wrong time; and both nearly-dead experiences as well as those where I would end up either totally dead or without a scratch on me at all.
It might have been the time I lost several quarts of blood (I weigh 145ish), or maybe the time I was ejected from a UTV and got pinned under the front axle. Not really sure what the worst was. And there are almost certainly other stories I'm not remembering at the moment.
So, I'm curious what kinds of things nearly killed everyone else here on FTE. Anyone have any good stories they'd wanna share?
acute bronchitis, emphysema, and pneumonia. the doctor in the hospital emergency room gave me a shot of penicillin without looking at my chart. or the med alert necklace i wear warning of penicillin allergy.
i woke up 3 days later in intensive coronary care after my blood pressure crashed and my heart stopped.
I died 3-times within the first year after I was born and was resuscitated back to life each time - I was a "Crib Death" baby that was forced to survive (They call it S.I.D.S. now)...
I can't count the number of times I've been close to death since then - most of that was through heavy alcohol and drug abuse - At one point in my life, I didn't care whether I lived to see another day or not - but yet, I was never suicidal - I just let the cards fall where they may...
I've had bullets fired at me; I've had a couple of mental breakdowns; I've had a minor stroke; etc., etc., etc... With everything I've done in my life and everything that's happened to me, I'm somewhat surprised to find myself still walking and breathing...
Remember tinker toys. The sticks and the round wheels. I picked up a bad habbit when I was about 6 of using my teeth to pull them apart. One night I wanted to turn off the night light that was in my room. It was plugged into the wall behind my bed with an extention cord. I couldn't unplug the cord with my hands so I used my teeth. Stripped the wires and burned a hole in the side of my mouth. My mom heard the noise of me being thrown to the floor and had to knock me loose from it then resusitate me. And to think I grew up to be an Electrician.
Fell a little over 20 feet from a tree. Broke 7 ribs, pelvis, and shattered my left elbow.
10 days in ICU. 9 in rehab/recovery unit.
Should probably have died or at least been wheelchair bound.
For a near death experience.... Friday after Thanksgiving 1987. Myself and 2 brother-in-laws when out on our annual beer drinking tour while our wives were shopping. We were supposed to meet them at the house by 6:00 to go out to dinner.....showed up around 9:00.
There is much more to the story but, not enough bandwidth.
I got hit head on at 13 ( on a blind curve ) , I on on honda mini trail , he , on a 305 Yamaha ..
woke up in ICU 3 or so days later with a broken arm , foot , concussion & multiple lacerations ...
Fell out of a tree once , landing on the back of my neck . broke my clavicle & chipped a bone in my neck ..
Flipped end over end in a car with my sisters boyfriend driving one time, No seat belts , doors came off we flew out , got really lucky..
Aside from being shot in the chest by an armed robber when I was 17 , not much else has happened ....
The first three I don't much remember , the gunshot didn't put me out ...

Same. Too many near-death experiences, one of the ones I remember is passing out while walking across a 4-lane highway at 3am and waking up to the sound of an 18-wheeler that was about 250' away. I stopped drinking about a year ago and my life has never been better. My post count has improved too!

Lotta snakes where you live? Where I am there's only 1 venomous species and it's rather rare, although I have encountered it numerous times. Whenever I have a gun on me, I shoot all snakes on sight just to be safe.

HOW THE HAIL ARE YOU STILL ALIVE? GOD MUST LOVE YOU VERY MUCH, MAN!
Sole occupant in a very fast moving (35mph) outboard powered 12ft boat, took my hand off the tiller for a second, boat hit a wave, motor turned hard over throwing me in the drink, as the boat turned at 30+mph circles right next to me (this is in the days before kill switches)...........Motor came with in 3-4ft of hitting me several times before I swam far enough away from it. Another boat picked me up, and we sat at a safe distance and watched it run out of fuel.
If you have ever wondered, a stainless steel propeller turning at 6,000 rpms will ruin your whole day...........permanently.
That's certainly true. I'd rather not wander into the deeply religious here, but sometimes I got the feeling I wasn't near death at all, it's just that "somebody" wanted me to see how easily He could make it happen if I didn't learn some humility.
There's one experience involving a train that I think would be an excellent example. I was out in the forest for the day and stopped to eat lunch under a train bridge (I'M A TROLL!!). Didn't want to get my feet wet to continue on my journey, so I walked up the side of the ballast pile onto the top of the bridge to see a locomotive coming at me from the other side of the 25' long bridge. Because I could hear the trains from my house about a mile away, I had always assumed that if one was coming it would be audible, from, well, a mile away! Guess not. So nowadays I always look backwards every minute or so when traveling by way of the tracks.
