Exclamation I.D. Please

98, 5.4, 4WD.............I need to know what transmission I have. There is NO STICKER on driver door......got nailed in the side.

The object is to install a transgo performance kit. Once I read somewhere that the E4OD and 4R100 could be distinguished by the bolts on the pan....can anyone help out????

I already searched all forums, guess my search words aren't correct.

I think if you go to www.fordvehicles.com you can plug in your VIN and the site will give info you're looking for.

Crawl under your vehicle and visually look at the tranny. The 4R100 is a HUGE boxy looking aluminum grid pattern looking thing. The other tranny, I thought they were 4R70W's, are more traditional looking with a smooth taper and big round bell shape. My 4R100 has a massive "L" shaped pan with a drain plug toward the rear. I think most (if not all) 5.4L 4x4's got the larger 4R100.

Hope this helps.

Hey Dan, I'm almost positive you got the E4OD tranny. The easiest way to tell is to look at the pan. The E4OD has a square pan with a corner cut off it. It will also have a deeper section right in the center. It is about 20 in long and about 13 in wide. I have the E4OD in mine. My sister in law has a 99 4x4 with the E4OD in hers also! Good luck!

Try this link to decode the VIN:http://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenanc...ls/default.asp It may not help with the trans. Also told me I had a 7.3L diesel in my Expy - don't think so. Gotta love Ford.

One more source of trans info: Fig. 1: Typical breakdown of a transmission identification label

An identification tag is located on the transmission case, typically on the left side rearward of the transmission range (TR) sensor on automatic transmissions and on the side of the case on a manual transmission. A transmission code is also located on the vehicle certification label, however it is alphanumeric code and only identifies the model of the transmission and cannot be used for parts ordering or application.
