Thought I would share a friend of mine got his tailgate stolen off his 05 f-250. I dident think about how easy this would be to take from someone it takes about 20 seconds to take your tailgate off. Keep it locked might just save you a few bills.
Twice as important for those of us with 2008 and up "super duty" tailgates, especially if you have the built in step! This can run in the 1000.00's to replace! Also a simple deterent is to take a short piece of 1/8" rubber coated galvanized cable and then run it thru the drain holes and over the frame. It will easily move as you open it and then it falls back when you close it. I use one of the small locks with a key on my ring so if I want to remove it, it can be undone in minutes. We always have to try to be one step ahead of the bad guys.
I also have a hose clamp around the post on the side that slides off. They rarely bring a socket set, or screw driver!
I put a hoseclamp on mine too but I took it one step further. I drilled out the screw/bolt head on the clamp in case they bring a screwdriver or wrench. If I need to remove the tailgate I can just finish drilling the screwhead out.
This may go a little off topic, but since we are talking about the "lower life forms", you guys should think about getting locking fuel caps. All it takes is for some little punk to pour water (or something else) into your fuel tank and think about the damage it can cause. We won't even go there with what would happen if this were a 6.4L or 6.7L (or any other diesel that also utilizes a common rail fuel injection setup).
It probably doesn't apply to the 6.0, but I know proper venting through the fuel cap was extremely important on my old 6.5 diesel. So I guess I prefer to use an oem locking cap, if one is available.
