Engine will not run unless choked

Hi, I have a 292 y block. I just recently got the truck running and it runs amazing when I have it choked t but when I take it off choke it will die, I can keep it running if I keep it almost floored. My guess is a lack of gas. Any ideas?

Check and see if the idle mixture screw is close to 1 1/2 turns out from seated position. If they are, you can try backing them out 3 turns from seat to see if there is improvement. Probably there wont be, and the carb will need to be taken apart and cleaned with installation of a kit. Right now the idle circuit isnt working.

eliminate massive vacuum leaks first
all vacuum hoses on carb pull them off and
put same size short piece of hose on
and block it with a screw or bolt in the end.
then report back.

Have A Nice Day!

Lots of things are possible on these old vehicles. By what you have decribed though, fuel pump problems isnt the likely culprit. The original Holley 2300 only had one small rubber hose to dist, and one from the back of valley to PCV on intake. Has the carburetor and or intake recently been reinstalled?

As listed above the problems to look for are poor ignition timing, vacuum leak, gunked up carb. You might want to change the fuel filter. There isnt much tuning to a 2300 to be done.

I think it's just the carb. The truck has been sitting for years. I really don't want to get it rebuilt considering it runs as well as it does while choked. Is there anything specific I can do without removing it to clean it out some.

just to finish the dance.
after finishing post i thought of 2 more
vacuum leak areas.
carb base gasket and intake gaskets.
now the kind of people that seek out
this kind of vehicle think nothing of
changing those things anyhow, just
because it's been sitting and they're
probably due for it.
i'm sensing you just kind of ended up with this vehicle.
fyi you don't GET that kind of carb rebuilt, you
rebuild it yourself.it doesn't get much easier than
that carb you have.

Have A Nice Day!

If it's been sitting for years change fuel filter probably needs new hose and while your at napa get a rebuild kit for the carb dont forget the numbers off the carb they will need it
It's easier than it looks and be sure to count your turns on the needles when taking it apart and you will be fine
Good luck

Many guys seem to get their start in mechanics with a Y powered old truck. What may be easy for the more seasoned becomes a daunting task for the others. This includes rebuilding a carb, removing a damper, and timing the ignition.
I suggest you remove the carburetor and buy a kit at Autozone,NAPA or Carquest. Then find someone that will disassemble, clean, install new parts and adjust, WHILE YOU OBSERVE THE PROCESS, so learning can take place.
Can it be done yourself? Maybe or not. Without some common sense the unit can be damaged during the teardown, or a gasket installed backwards, or jets bummed up, or powervalve misinstalled, or float improperly set.
Then we will have a long thread on why isnt my rebuilt carb working.
