driving down the road all of my factory gauges either went to full, 0 oil pressure, high temp, 0 volts
a mechanic called the culprit a constant voltage regulator, (cvr).
tore out the gauge panel as suggested by ford, but it aint there!
any ideas where i may find this critter on a 87 f150
I think the IVR (instrument voltage regulator) is mounted to the back of the instrument panel. It is not very big. I'd say it is less that two inches long by about 3/4 inch tall by 3/4 inch wide. Ford went to a different type of gauge several years ago that does not need the gauge. I don't know which year they changed. Maybe Steve83 knows.
i had the panel out, speedo cable, and 2 block connectors for the wires. the only other thing on the panel are the conectors for the bulbs. disasembled the cluster just to make sure it wasnt hiding in there. haynes has nothing in their manual and no type of regulator in wiring diagrams.
There was no instrument VR used after '86. After that, the instruments were electrically balanced - that's why they all have 3 terminals (except the volt gauge of course). For all the gauges to die, they must have lost the 12V supply thru the R/Y wire off fuse #18 or the ground thru the Bk wire at pin B2.
steve,
thanks for posting info, you probally just saved me alot of money and frustration. turns out that #18 fuse was melted in the socket. it was a 10 amp fuse
from the factory. i pulled the fuse panel loose and the thing was on its was to a total meltdown.
so i unhooked the battery and with a few hours work in the morning the beast will be running again
