Update: I have ruled out the carburator. The engine idles ok now but still sounds like it is missing bad. The Timing is dead on,( It doesnt need to be advanced to run anymore). I am thinking it is a spark issue or low compression. I unplugged and reconnected the spark plug wires off the distributor one at a time with the engine running. The idle did not drop at any time when I pulled a plug wire off the distributor. I am thinking it may have a random misfire or a weak coil. I am going to replace the coil to see if that helps. if not then I will move to the pick up in the distributor. What else should I check?
Check the dist. cap for a crack and carbon and also the rotor. Check the mechanical and vacuum advance for free operation, is this points or solid state? I have seen points act strangely like a flooding cond. and gapping them was the remedy.

The only thing I changed was the carb, we tried a third one and the truck runs better than with the previous two. It has the electronic ignition in it, blue grommet ignition box.
Well, then you have a carb problem. It might have flooded and loaded up and fouled out a few plugs and a new set of plugs is in order. I have had that happen before too. Carb might be fine but plugs aren't. I understand that the plugs, cap, rotor seem fine, but i had an engine run funny after a carb change, blamed the carb. Pretty soon lost spark, I had bumped the distributor while changing the carb and the tip of the rotor came loose and the metal end caught on the cap, ripped it loose and I had a spark and timing issue, all from a carb change.
Just a thought for the future, if you don't have curb idle adjusted right, you could be out of the idle cicuit. You need to take your time setting, as the fuel level takes about 30 seconds to stabilize after adjustment. Holley TV : Featured Holley TV // on the PowerTV Network
