Question New Guy, looking for advice.

Hey guys, name's Blaze, from northern IL.
Just started checking out your forum and as a member of a Mustang forum, I know they can be great places for information and advice so I joined.

Anyway, I am looking at a 1996 F-250 XLT, 7.5 L, 4x4, Auto and I believe its the 6.5 ft bed. It's got 69,XXX original miles. It's very clean from what I can see in the pictures. No major body rust from what I can tell in the pictures. I am going to check it out tomorrow. I have bought and sold quite a few cars before, just wondering if you guys can give me a heads up on anything in particular I should pay attention to/look for with a truck like this? Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the forum, I've been trying to come up with some Steeler joke, but I'm drawing a blank... maybe someone else can help out. Anyway, that truck looks pretty nice, I like my ext cab f250. The 460 will get crappy mpg, so it wouldnt make a good DD unless you have a short commute. E4OD trans is strong but expensive to rebuild or replace. They usually rust at the fenders right where that chrome strip is. Front suspension is TTB, twin traction beam and is not the best setup but not too terrible. They go through ball joints, and I wouldnt be surprised to see them bad at 69k miles. If they have grease fittings they have been replaced, if they don't they are probably original. Bearings in the steering column go bad, but at 69k they should be ok.

Haha, bring on the Steeler jokes! I catch **** from my friends all the time because I live in the Chicagoland area and I am not a Bears fan.

Yeah as far as the gas mileage, I am a little hesitant with this truck. Obviously, looking at trucks for a DD, I know that mpg's are not going to be great. When I saw this truck, I was hoping it had the 5.8... I have no idea what to expect with the 7.5 but I am hoping for 10 mpg??? I had a 2003 Excursion a couple years back that I got 10-12 mpg in. I don't have the worst commute so I haven't decided if that's a deal breaker yet... I think it looks clean enough that I should still go check it out. Thanks for your reply. Anyone else?

Drive it! see what you think. check the oil and trans fluid and radiator fluid. You want black oil, trans fluid that doesn't smell burnt and is a red color, and check the radiator fluid before and after test drive, it checks for leaks in the coolant system.

Check stuff to see if it works. map lights, heater, AC, lights, 4x4, ect.

I have a 1992 F350 4x4 w/5.8L engine, E4OD trans. and factory 3.55 gears. After a lot of work to fix the sins of the past I am finally getting almost 13 MPGs out of this thing running 70MPH on the interstate. I am managing around 12.5 MPG with combined city/highway driving.

That 7.5L truck is not really going to be much worse, in fact it may be the same or perhaps a little better. When you look at it take a peek at the door tag to see what the gear ratios are. Here is a link to the axle codes: https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...de_Chart_.html

Welcome to FTE!

That truck is straight. I would definatly test drive it, and if you can get it on the back roads, see if you like the handling and power. I feel its better to get a vehicle your comfortable with because in the long run, you'll drive more sensably.
