I recently bought a 03 6.0. I was wondering if there is an easy way to tell if the er has been deleted. This is my first diesel and don't know what Im looking for. It has 130,000 miles on it and runs like a new one. I want to delete the egress if it hasn't been done. Also what type of coolant should i use?

With all due respect (I mean that) if this is your first diesel how do you know this one runs like a new one? The reason I ask is that I thought mine was running fine until I noticed some slight missing on cold mornings when I started it up. After about 30 seconds or so it would straighten itself out and seemed to run just fine. Ends up the FICM needed to be replaced. After it was replaced I noticed a significant improvement when pulling my horse trailer. I had not noticed any degradation before the new FICM but there sure was an improvement with the new one.
Please don't be upset with my question. I really am not trying to be a smart ***.
you will need gauges and run 5w-40 synthetic oil with OEM filters only. i would flush the coolant and switch to cat ec-1 rated elc. its not required, but its really good. you could just go with a g-05 rated like the gold but if so, id go with zerex form napa. also gee a coolant filter. if u look next to the oil fill tube, there is the intake manifold that looks like a big horseshoe shape going around. there will be an egr cooler that runs next to it on the left side of the motor, in between the oil filter base and the manifold. if there isnt a cooler there, there will just be a curved coolant tube in the place of that. the tech folder is a good place to look at engine diagrams.
For our 03's, the EGR isn't as much of an issue as injectors and heads tend to be. Make sure you use the CORRECT oil filters (I've been using Motorcraft and Frams with no problems) with a quality oil (again I use either Motorcraft or Rotella) and you should be good. IMO, about 40% of the diesel guys I know use synthetic and the rest of us use dino so it comes down to choice. I would NOT recommend running past 5K on your oil changes because of shear. We spent a lot of bucks for these trucks and it doesn't make sense to cut corners on maintenance...if you expect them to last. As for the coolant...yup, use the gold!
