Hi everyone! I am redoing the exaust system on my 1990 f-350 5 speed and am looking for some suggestions. The truck came with duel exaust (2" pipes) from the manifolds which ran thru 18" glasspacks. Loud isnt the word. I want to keep the duel exaust but was wondering what type of mufflers to go with? I also wanted to decrease back pressure to improve mpg. (currently getting 15-17mpg) would 2 1/2" pipes be sufficient or would I have to go larger? also when I haul a trailer I loose power going up the slightest hills and was told it was due to the 2" pipes.
2.5" should be ok, 3" would be better. To quiet it down some use longer mufflers. Swap the 18" out for something in the 24"-36" range, or go to a baffled muffler.
thanks, another question- the mechanic told me that the diameter on the stock manifolds were 2 1/2" can I still go to 3" pipes? or should I stick with 2 1/2" ?
My partner put a flowmaster 3"in/out in his diesel. That sound it makes a little hard to describe. Loud would be a good start. Handful of lugnuts in the crankcase would be my second choice.
I think he thought it was going to sound like his mustang. I think not...
that dosnt sound good with the glasspacks it was loud but sounded like a Harley fatboy with headers which wasn't bad but I haul horses and it just seemed a little to loud. I went to a muffler shop and they said the flowmasters would quiet it down some but I dont want it to sound like crap either.
don't know what I'm gonna do? maybe I'll just replace the system with longer glasspacks.
Thanks for the info and any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thats what I'm gonna do- 3" pipes and 24" glasspacks
That should do the trick. It might not be much quieter, but the added pipe diameter, and longer mufflers will make it a much lower, more mellow rumble.
