Been reading about the 6.0 diesels and the issues they may have. Sold my 7.3 last year and was a big mistake. Now there are plenty of 6.0 cheaper than a 7.3. One I am looking at is 2006 lariat 4X4 with 86k. Dealer service since new. Oasis report says no recall and no major work just the basic maintenance. It's a crew cab FX4 and they are asking 23k for it. Any piece of advice helps. Thanks

This best suited to the 6.0L...but I'll try to help out as much as I can. Prices, that's something that varies by location. I'd look around at other trucks in the area to see what they're going for. Might talk to your brick & mortar insurance agent and see what they're paying out for trucks similar to that which have been totaled (they use some formula that takes local market into figure). The 6.0L got a bad rap in the early days because they were pushed out there before most of the techs had clue how to diagnose & repair them. Thus the early ones suffered allot of repeat failures because the root failure wasn't addressed. You think the 6.0L have a crappy reputation, think about the crap that's spread about the 6.4L...and I've recently started to hear horror stories about the 6.7L. It all boils down to this...more folks will talk about their problem with the truck than how great they are. Meaning...most of the folks in the 6.0L forum came to FTE looking for a solution to a problem...not to brag about their truck.
It's really hard to compare the 6.0L & 7.3L just by how much different they are from each other. The 6.0L is an emission engine...that in it's self is part of the issues it suffers from. And Dodge/Cummins & GM-Chevy/Duramax have allot of issues with their EGR systems just like the 6.0L engine. The '06/'07 have fewer problems than the '05...but there are still a couple of things you need to look for. White residue around the degas cap will tell you the truck has been puking coolant...there's a couple of reasons for that; some easy/cheap fix a couple of others get expensive quick. Need to have an AE or ScanGauge to check the delta between the EOT & ECT; anything greater than 15F means your oil cooler is clogged and can/will take out the EGR cooler...which could lead to blown head-gaskets or hydro-lock the engine. Look at the coolant in the degas tank; should be dark yellow/gold colored. Anything else could be signs of trouble.
If the Oasis looks good and the above doesn't apply to the truck (no puking, good coolant) I'd say find out what a realistic price is and go for it. That 6.0L will be completely different that your old 7.3L just in the power aspect alone.
Thanks for the reply. 7.3 here is hard to come by. 6.0 are a dime a dozen and are just a few thousand more than the 7.3. Credit union will not not finance me with the 7.3 because they go by the wholesale blue book which doesn't account much for the 7.3's value.

If you find a truck that's in good shape...you might think about a signature loan with the truck as part of the collateral. I've done something like that for a couple of things in the past when I came across a deal I couldn't pass up but didn't have all the cash on hand.
