I HAVE A 92 FORD 4X4 WITH STRAIGHT 300 6 CYL. YESTERDAY ALL AT THE SAME TIME. MY REAR ABS LIGHT CAME ON,SPEEDOMETER STARTED BOUNCING AND TRANSMISSION SHIFTED HARD THEN BEGAN SLIPPING. ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT COULD BE GOING ON?
pull the rear diff cover off and change the fluid too....make sure the clutch packs for the limited slip aren't busted up. if they are the metal in there will do all kinds of stuff to your speedo.
The speed sensor controls the ABS and the transmission shifting so they are all related to the same problem. Check the wires like Steve said first. The signal from the rear end to the speedo is a pulse signal, any unteruption in that signal (bad wire) would cause it not to work. If that checks out. the speed sensor ring might have lost a tooth on it, so open the diff cover and inspect it. Check to make sure none of the teeth are damaged. If so, replace it, it's cheap enough. If that doesn't work, it could be the speed sensor on top of the differential.
