Need help with muffler instalation

My Bronco is a 1986 300 inline 6 and I am installing a muffler. In my area we don't have emissions so i cut the CAT off. I have heard that the muffler needs to be a certain distance from the manifold. Does anyone know if that is true and if so how far?

Never heard of that, I cut my cat off and the muffler is pretty close to the next cat.

You can put the muffler anywhere you want. The farther back the quieter it will be.

I've also heard the farther back you put it the deeper the tone.

This is actually useful info for me too, i eventually want to put knockoff flowmasters on but didn't know where to locate them on the exhaust line... I was thinking near the future headers it would have the long tubes to expand and resonate before exiting which would me louder sound out in the rear but if the muffler was further back it would be louder in the cabin. I am still not sure but doing all that is a long way into the future... Good luck with yours Super Bronco, also what kind of muffler is it? Maybe try recording a video of the finished product so we can see your work in action

Thanks for all the info guys it is all very helpful. GruesomeJeans, it is a Flowmaster extreme off road muffler. It is supposed to have 10 times the crush weight of a normal muffler so it should hold up longer for when i get high centered and all. I will try to take a video.

Ah very nice that should sound pretty good. i have cherry bombs right now and i like the growl of them but with my current setup i have flex pipe so it doesn't sound as good as it could

You have to be doing some pretty intense stuff to get high centered in our Broncos. I love Flowmasters, I have a super 44 on the Zebra.

I would be scared to high center one... Might tip over sideways or something. I do like flowmasters and if i can find some FM 40s for cheap i might get those purely for the quality and the brand name, but if they are too expensive i might go with the knock offs and call it good. To me it doesn't matter too much cause it is under the truck and won't really matter on the brand but it would be nice to say i have FM instead of knockoffs.

I only get high centered when I go over a water bar, sometimes, when i am out wheel'n or if i go through a big puddle that had bigger ruts than anticipated on the trail. It is not very offten that it happens but it is nice to know that i will have a muffler that cand handle it if it does happen from time to time.

Ya it is nice. What about your drive lines? Do they hang low enough to get bent?

No and neither does the muffler ,after further investigation, but i still want that one because of how I use my Bronco. But the muffler project has to go on the back burner for a while because it is looking like I have a cracked block so now I am looking for a new engine.

Not a 100% sure just know that i have had over heating issues for awhile and fixed everything I could think of. finally found a cracked head and blown gasket but even after that was fixed it still over heated. Got a mechanic to look it over to see if I missed anything and they found the head was cracked. My best guess is that i did not switch back to an antifreeze mix soon enough after winter hit and for some reason the freeze plugs didn't give. But found another engine with a manual tranny so I am going to get it and convert it to a manual. At least it will be a fun little project.
