Melling oil pump

Hi all, I'm starting to put my 400 back together and have hit my first and hopfully the only snag. When the pump is bolted down and you turn the crank to make sure the pump housing clears, the first counter weight hits the housing. My question is can I grind the housing to get the clearence I need or do I do something else? It's hitting the pump bolt boss. Also they said to check the rotor clearances but they don't tell you where to check and what clearances are acceptable. Please help the OLD boy out Thanks Popa John

Hey bud. There is nothing wrong with removing a little from a rough casting to obtain clearance as long as it is from somewhere that doesn't matter and that sounds fine. Clearance is measured between the rotor and the cover plate. Slip it back half way and get the feeler gauge in there. Do it in a few different spots. Don't believe the clearance is aver 2-3 thou. Just went to look in the shed for my rebuild book but can't find it. HA.
