Oil changes

Well today I was due to change my oil in my 04 F350. Well did my usual list of changing my oil from taking the filter out first, let it drain for a few minutes. Right now I don't have the valve for draining my pan so I have to take the nut off the pan. My last few changes when i felt my oil right before it drained into my drain pan it would usually feel like new oil, this time when I felt it this time the oil felt like spoiled milk.

From my previous reading when I was doing a round trip from the middle of NC to the cost and back, my deltas were around 24*, which I'm getting a coolent by-pass this week and will do a extended coolent flush, hopefully I don't have to fork up a new oil cooler.

Will a oil by-pass system help with the spoiled milk feeling, and I'm getting a coolent filter soon, would I have to fork up a oil cooler at the near future?

If you already have water in the oil, spoiled milk, it's too late. You have a cooler leaking. Better fix it right before you lunch the motor.

You should see oil in the coolant, did you look at the degas bottle?

I've looked in the degas bottle and it's still good, I have no sign of oil in the coolent.

Well I'll look into getting a new oil cooler, should I worry about getting a new EGR cooler as well even though most people say when you replace one replace both, but right now I can probably only afford the oil cooler.

I had coolant in my oil, but no oil in my coolant. I only had an EGR failure, but replaced the oil cooler anyway. I never had any oil in my coolant.

DO NOT SKIMP! Just do both at the same time. Doing on and not the other is like having open heart surgery to replace one artery but not the other when both need replacement. Insanity.

You can always delete the EGR cooler and have enough for the oil cooler.

Your delta is telling you to do both.

Either delete (not usually recommended) the EGR cooler AND replace the oil cooler or sell the truck.

I see that you have a 2004 truck so is it a round or square egr cooler.

If its a round one you could reuse it they are built way better I would pull the EGR Valve and verify the egr cooler isnt leaking a pinhole leak maybe hard to spot the white smoke out the Exhaust.

You can try to flush it but since its the oil cooler that came with the truck in 2004 its probably to far Gone. I know that some folks have been able to flush oil cooler that was really plugged but some of them flushed for weeks some Months. IMO theres a line you cross when you try a couple flushes if it works GREAT But if it dont I think some are just waisting there time. When a coolant passage in the oil cooler becomes plugged its dang neer impossible to get any cleaner in it to clean it out. And at this point replacement of the oil cooler is the Best option. I know some Folks spent more time doing repeated flushes than it takes to just replace the oil cooler and be Done with it. I guess to each his own

They probably thought their time and the cleaner was cheaper. In the long run unless you're lucky, not so.

Square egr cooler 24* spread IMO your on borrowed time

Now your supposed to change the Oil cooler when the egr cooler bursts thats a given

But If your EGR cooler hasnt Popped yet I would take a chance and clean it out soak in some purple power or something clean good and put it back into USE
I beleive it was Just easyier for Ford to tell the Mechanics to change Both Coolers than try to Get them to Understand the diffrent Failure senerios and Pray that they were ALL on the same page and the right parts would be changed each time. So they said change Both Coolers so there could be NO Misinterpretation of what parts to change

Now If you get the oil cooler changed B4 the EGR cooler Lets Loose then you know it can withstand a 24* spread its been tested that High and hope it hasnt deteriorated inside.

But if you have to pay someone to do the work better to Bite the Bullet and change them both. If you do it the Labor is free and you can deal with it if your in a Tight spot and Money is tight.

But If you let it Go Much Longer the Price may Skyrocket when the egr cooler Pops and floods into the cylinders overpressurizing and may Blow a Head Gasket out hydrolock may also Hurt the Piston wrist pin assemblys just My.002

New cooler is probably cheaper than the labor rate to clean and reinstall a possibly defective part.
