I just picked up a government owned '00 XLT 4x4 with the 5.4L, 4.10 gears and a limited slip differential.
It has 172k and every delete package that ford offered. No 3rd row, carpet or rear heat.
I was very happy to get 15.4 mpg over 200 miles today in mixed city and highway driving conditions.
It appears that I have a manifold leak, as I get a tick under load.
At speeds above 30 mph a driveline vibration/growl/whine becomes noticeable and gets louder as the vehicle speed increases. Switching into or out of 4WD does not change the noise. That leads to another thing that puzzles me. The left front hub has no "auto" position and the right one does.
The only other issue is the steering is a bit loose off center and the wheel is turned about 20 degrees to the left when going straight.
Does anyone have any experience with any of these issues? I got a good deal on this unit and look forward to getting it fixed up.
Hopefully I can upload some photos of the new Ex soon.
To get your steering wheel centered and the play taken out is very simple. Just get the front end aligned and tell them to center the wheel and adjust the slack in the steering grear. It has a "slack" adjustment on the steering gear box.
Some of you guys out there help get Daewoo get started and give him so reps for posting a picture of his EX.
Nice EX, mine is a former gov owned also, Army Corps of Engineers. I didn't know 4.10 was an available ratio on the EX's, maybe only on the V-8's? What are the plans for it?
I crawled under the front end today and checked the steering components. All is tight except for the steering box. 1.5 inches of play off center before the pitman arm moves. I started the truck 6 times yesterday and today it won't crank. I suppose I will throw in a new starter from DB Electric.
Welcome !
Lots of info on the vaccum hubs on here.....spray the "crack" where they rotate with WD 40 to loosen them up.....you can pull them off and soak them...most guys replace them with manual hubs like Wrn or milemarker premiums......keep an eye on Summit Racing....they put the milemarkers on sale for $99 from time to time.... There is a spiral lock kit you will need also.....if you get milemakers I will show you how to get them....hopefully with less problems than I had since I have been through it.
