I have a 73 f100 longbed 390 auto 2wd. All my gauges read high. I checked the resistor wire in the cluster wiring. It reads 12v, which I'm pretty sure is too high. What should it be and what is the best way to fix it?
The voltage after the resistor wire (at the ICVR input) won't give you any useful information because the current through it is low and pulsed. Check the voltage at the output of the ICVR as MH suggests; I too suspect it's bad.
You can easily check the resistor wire by measuring the resistance between the ICVR input stud (ICVR removed) and an upstream hot-in-ACC circuit tap.
Thanks for the info. I had read a thread a few months ago about somebody asking about rewiring gauges. I remember somebody mentioning that there was something controlling the voltage to the gauges. I just couldn't find it again. I'll be checking into that now
I had a similar problem with my F150 360fe – the gauges (especially temp and fuel) where reading high and were often erratic…major headlight pulsation too. Turned out the ground wire to the engine had never been reconnected after an engine change (previous owner). Problem solved after reconnection.
