HPOP Install

I have ordered a new HPOP (Riffraff of course) and plan to install it as soon as I am home.

that will be in two weeks.

Does any one have any installation instructions I can preview before I get home and start this project (if it is warm enough)?

Thanks

I just put in my T-500 and followed Clay's instructions (except I forgot to order the IPR o-ring kit ).

Pretty easy to do if you follow the instructions.

Just remember that quart or so of oil in the HPOP reservoir makes a really big mess. Outside of that, it is straight forward and not that hard.

Now that my truck has 200k miles and appears to have an bad LPOP....I wonder if I should do both LPOP and HPOP together....any thoughts?

If you think you have a weak LPOP I would swap it out with a Melling LPOP. It will be much better for you. Then decide if your HPOP is performing or not.

Yes Ive read the Melling thread. Apparently the bad LPOP may be the cause of my truck suddenly turning off after being started last week in 35F weather.

Given that I am a diesel newbie, I still dont see the relationship between the low engine oil pressure and the engine deciding to turn off. I wasnt in the cab when it turned off so I dont know if the oil pressure was low or not during the event.

If the oil pressure is to low it will not fill the HPOP reservoir with oil. When it runs low, the HPOP sucks air and does not supply the injectors with high pressure oil. The injectors need this oil to shoot the fuel (vaporize it) and therfore the engine runs out of fuel and dies.

LPOP

If you have good engine oil pressure on the gauge in the dash I would think that your LPOP is ok.

Also you can check the oil level in the HPOP resiviour to be sure that it is staying full. do this when ever the truck stops and then you will know if your LPOP is keeping up.

So the diesel-fuel injectors use engine oil to activate?

They use engine oil on a piston to increase the fuel pressure 7:1. So if you have 3,000 PSI of HPOP pressure you will have about 21,000 psi fuel pressure in the injector to spray out of the nozzle. The injector is triggered by the IDM when the PCM tells it to fire that injector based on cam position sensor output.

Thanks for the explanation Mr. Much appreciated.

I dont know what IDM or PCM is but I get the general idea now.

Has someone put up a procedure for checking the HPOP oil-level?

To check the HPOP level you just remove the powerstroke cover and then remove the 3/16" allen plug. Look inside the reservoir and the oil level should be about an inch from the plug hole. Reinstall the plug before starting the engine though!

Thanks much. I will do this check after she runs warm and then is turned off.

HPOP installation is a piece of cake...you might want to relocate the EBV tube off the front plate while you're at it...I wish I did. It's a thin plate to be wrenching on without braking the seal.

Just be careful to not drop anything while you have the gear exposed. If you run into trouble just post up a question on here...lots of us have had HPOP issues and I expect you'd get an answer in no time.

Good luck!
