my dad's 1990 f250 loses tach response within about 10 minutes of initial startup, and therefore causes the normal erratic shifting. we changed the sensor, checked every wire connected to the starter solenoid for continuity, and the trans. computer. And about two days ago it started trying to take off in 3rd gear. What could this be?!?!?!?!?!
how does the wiring look to the tach sensor?
wait a second......... so what your saying is,the tach issue has been resolved and is now working fine? if so.it's just a faulty MLPS now.
it just so happened to go out on ya right after the tach.bad timing lol.
be sure to tell him to get the MLPS that comes with an updated plug.it's likely most E40D's on the road today have already been updated.if not,it needs to be.you'll know if the new MLPS plugs in,it's already been updated.
you can pull the codes if it you makes you feel better.but wrong gear starts and neutral while going down the road screams failed MLPS.
this is why i just changed mine to avoid the issue latter.was the old style.
when looking for the part, ask for a neutral safety switch or range sensor.this should help their computers pull it up.
Is the trans in limp mode (od light flashing)? Also Pleas clarify if the tach is fixed or not from How I'm reading it it doesn't say the tach was fixed if the tach is still not working I would pull trans codes or have a trans shop do it for you I know it always takes me a long time to interpret what code I'm getting. I don't see how the MLPS could cause a wrong gear start unless it is throwing the trans into limp mode. Check your grounds especialy the negative cable on the drivers side battery I've seen bad grounds make an E4OD do some wierd things.
My truck does something similar, the tac does not work, there is a two prong round plug that comes off of my ip when it is unpluged the truck runs fine and shifts normal but no tac, when it is pluged in the tac works but the engine will only run at 1000, 2000, or 3000 rpm there is no in between. what the hell? What year did they start the e4od in the 250?
there is a relay on the drivers side fender, kinda just forward of the vacuum canister....thats the tach relay...they are cheap enough...try changing it out.... there is a way you can jump it out too but i dont recomend it
i had a similar issue with mine
changed the tach sensor after a day or 2 the torque converter wouldn't lock up
trans ran real hot
would take off in weird gears would lug the hell out of the engine at times
i replaced both the relays under the power brake booster ( wasn't sure with on went to the trans or tach or whatever) but figured they were both old and only 7 bucks a piece
this fixed it right up been working ever since (125000 miles)
