6.0 maintenance

I own a 2004 F-250 6.0 liter with 109k miles. Im replacing the EGR cooler AGAIN since I bought it. Im not happy about it , but its almost paid off so I will just hope for the best. I need some maintenance tips to keep this thing running for along time. I change the oil every 5-10k and fuel filter every 7 to 10k. What else should I be doing to keep it in good shape and avoid anymore major repairs. Just flushed the cooling system at 100k. Send me some ideas..thanks

I am definitely not a pro at this engine. But I know what helps me are gauges, Scangauge II is a good one to help you monitor whats going on under the hood. Thats what I have. repeated EGR cooler failure is usually caused by plugged oil cooler so you may want to have that checked that out as well (getting gauges would help tell you your oil cooler status).

Most on here recommend a STRICT 5K oil change interval as well. That is just the tip of the ice berg, I am sure there will be many responses to help you out...

What symptoms are causing you to change the egr cooler? Have you changed the oil cooler? What are their delta spreads? More questions than answers prompted by your post.

....this wasn't the first flush ever though, right? Like 69cj said, you absolutely need to check the difference between coolant and oil temps to see if the oil cooler is what's eating your egr cooler.

More info is always a good idea, it'll help the people here help you faster

Here's a starting point for some reading about the engine:

agree with all last posts and go buy a scanguage asap.
Your delta spread will tell you if your oilcooler is getting clogged up and causing the egr cooler to fail. A failed egr cooler can lead to head gasket issues. From what I have gathered when the oil cooler gets plugged it doesent allow enough coolant into the egr cooler and the coolant thats in the cooler gets boiled by the exhaust gases. So finding the root cause of the egr cooler failing is a must. Have you looked into EGR delete or the Bulletproof oilcooler/egr cooler setup?

I flush the cooling system every 30k. so not not the first time. I bought the aftermarket EGR cooler from bulletproof and was holding off on the aftermarket oil cooler because they want $2200 bucks...ouch! Just spoke with my mechanic and he is going to do some research on the oil cooler being bad. It was replaced at 68k when the last egr cooler blew.

My symptoms were white smoke from the exhaust.
no loss of power.
coolant loss from the resevoir

I went with the factory oil cooler, EGR delete, and coolant filter. I don't think to make the truck highly reliable, you necessarily need the aftermarket oil cooler. The factory oil cooler with routine maintenance and the good coolant in the system should last you a while. I did the work at 108k and currently have 128k. Only issue since was the thermostat I just replaced. Temps are healthy and delta is healthy.

I feel it would be insanity to do all the work to get to the EGR cooler and replace/delete it, and not rebuild/replace the oil cooler.

i agree wif mudhengib. in fact most of the guys will concur wif me when i say tat it is ford's recommendations that if u were to replace the egr cooler, it would be advisable to replace the oil cooler as well. now since u probably have everything apart, u might wanna replace the dummy plugs / standpipes & stc fitting. check ur ipr screen and test the icp valve. make sure the egr valve is clean, working good, and the ebp tube are all clean.

ur oil change interval seems kinda far apart. 5 - 10k? are u running synthetic? even so, synthetic intervals should be kept to 5k. conventional oil should be kept to 3k in my opinion.

if u constantly do ur coolant flushes, and u use the ford gold coolant, then u neednt worry about getting a coolant filter, unless u do heavy-duty stuff wif ur truck, like towing constantly, etc etc.

if i can remember any more, i'll chime in again. i'm gonna go lay down and dream bout boobies now. *yawn

best of luck to the OP.

Snuggy, I would still install a coolant filter. Some blocks, mine included, can leach rather large amounts of casting sand.

Wow that's a pretty good price. I know that is a popular oil.

I also think there is a thread on oil and oil comparisons in the tech folder
