A few years back I bought this 40 Ford 1 1/2 ton cab/chassis. I got it from a guy in his 30s who said it was something his dad used to mess around with back in the 80s. He said as far as he knew the engine was from an oldsmobile, and so was the auto trans..... It didn't run. I trailered it home and upon starting it knocked like crazy. Turns out it was a 401 buick nailhead. The conversion was very sketchy with poorly welded engine mounts etc. After much thought, I sold the engine for 300.00 and replaced it with a 302 and a t-18. This made a great truck and I enjoyed it for a few more years. I later found a 37 1 1/2 ton with an 8BA flathead which I still use. I'm currently rebuilding a slightly modified 59 F350 9' flareside. What I'm looking for here is pictures of and examples of repowered/modified bigger Ford trucks. What's out there?
Giving you a bump here, maybe somebody might have missed this one.
In high school my auto shop teacher was always buying and selling old cars and trucks. One day he brought in a '38 1.5 ton flatbed, all stock, mechanical brakes and flathead, decent tan and brown paint. I replaced the water pump on it and we swapped out the front mechanical brakes for later juice brakes, the rear he swapped in a big truck rear to get juice brakes there. Since then I had seen the truck now and then and found he lowered the front end, threw in a big block Chebby and auto.
I drove a 38 tonner as a dd for 9 years. Cable brakes didnt matter. I did add a merc 4" crank for better power. I will never forget the years I spent with that as my only rig......Converyed it to 12 volts so I could use electric trailer brakes while towing. Before and after photos... I bought a 47 bed and narrowed it down to fit and painted it faded red to match. I was a hopeless romantic for the old days back the. Oh wait, I still am.
