I'm going to sit back for a while and wait for all the unfounded bad-mouthing to simmer down.

I ran Superchip for over 4 years with no problems without gauges. But when I towed, I used the safe tow tune. Once I got my DP-TUNER, I found out that custom tunes are far more better.

Cody. Did I miss something here? Did a mod delete some post I don't see? I don't see what needs to simmer down.

No, it was a preemptive warning.

The stuff's about to get deep in here.

i bought a truck from a local that ran my newly purchased 01 psd with sc 1705 and he ran it for 200,000 miles in the tow safe tune with no problems i would not consider pulling much at all in any of the perfomance tunes without gauges soon will get dp tunes

Another Superchips 1705 tuner user here too in the begining without gauges but didn't hot rod, mainly for better shifting caracteristics, it worked for me at the time, no problems. The biggest thing is I didn't know about custom tuning back then. It does make for a heck of a code reader if you do go that route..

When I bought my Excursion the PO had installed a 1705. I still had my stock 7.3 F250 to compare it to and the 1705 was quite a bit better. More power and crisper shifts. It was better than stock.
Now, as Rick said, custom tunes, are definitely better. I was blown away when I swapped the 1705 for my DP, what a difference. It didn't just feel like it had more power and better shifts, it felt like a different truck. I know it sounds weird but it felt lighter.
With your 1705, I wouldn't use the highest setting without at least a pyro gauge and would be hesitant heavy towing in the second setting without a gauge. Just not worth the risk.

another newbie here:
I've the same questions, BUTT I do have Bullydog trans tmp, egr temp, and boost guage.

1705 and all installed by prior owner.

I just got the truck before Christmas and thought the boost gauge was broke, since I only drove it around town and it wasn't lit.
Turns out only a bulb ($2) was blown, and I finally got onto it and the needle moved a bit.

BUTT anyways - in "tow safe mode" what do I gain? Crisper shifts? World Peace?

I just towed a Dodge Caravan about 1,000 miles down I95 from Md to Ms and got 14.08 MPG (hand calculated).

I currently run the 1705. When I tow , I use tow mode, and have had no problem whatsoever. The rest of the time I run it in performance tune and all has been good.
I am aware that this programmer is not considered to one of the "better" ones, but for the cost of it compared to the others(back when I bought mine), you cant beat it!
My fuel mileage it above average, and thats more what I was looking for. I have a six speed ,so shift points aren't an issue.
I guess too, it does give my truck a bunch more power, probably more than I need. I can easily do over 100 pretty quick, and as I tell my son,"thats alot of truck to have running that fast! And, for the sake of him not driving that fast, I also let him know that most policemen aren't too fond of it!

Welcome to FTE.

You shouldn't have any problems with the SC as long as you run in the right tune for what you are doing. With the "tow safe" tune you will have a little more power then stock and the shifting will be crisper.

I'm not sure about World Peace, but if you keep the speed down, you will have Cop Peace.

When I had my SC 1855(?) in the 2 problems I had were starting and shifting.

My truck would smoke and romp like it was 10 degree's out when the temps got to the 50's. The shift was horrid. WOT shift where hard and felt OK most times, but sometimes they would flare and then slam into gear. Part throttle shifts you never new what you where going to get.

I have no problems stock or with my PHP tunes. My 80DD setting has more power then he the SC had on high, with way lower EGT's.
