upgrading motor???

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Oct-02 AT 11:21 PM (EST)]Right now I have a 300-6. I need a 351, ok...maybe want one very badly. I know that the trannys are the same bolt pattern, but I need to know if Ford used the same wiring harness in trucks with the 300 and 351. Because I would like to just plug in the computer change the motor mounts, drop-in the motor and go. Otherwise would it just be easier to run carb and go that route??? I would love any help I can get!!!!! Thanks a ton!!!! Paul

Stick with the EFI. Better gas mileage, more reliable and better starting.

It is almost as simple as what you described, assuming that you stay within the same year motor/truck. Same wiring harness, change the computer (needs to match your motor/tranny combo), motor mounts, frame mounts, exhaust y-pipe, radiator, radiator and AC hoses, and power steering lines.

Two things that are kind of a pain, getting the computer out of the firewall, you need to unbolt the inner fender and pull it out that way. Second, is the frame mounts bolt to the crossmember. There are two big rivets that are in the way, you will need to drill them out (this took me by far the longest of anything).

It took me a weekend to swap my EFI 300 for an EFI 351w. If you are buying a used motor, I would suggest doing a little preventative maintenance....rear main seal, valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket and check out that oil pan. They are infamous for rusting through.
