Anybody on here enjoy morrell mushrooms? There are starting to pop up around here and my wife is cooking some up tonight. Man they are tasty! I think the main reason is you only get to eat them for about 3 weeks out of the year.
yup! They really are a delicacy.
Its one item that they never have been able to cultivate on a commercial scale.
They are still 3 weeks to a month away from growing here.
I love morrels, one of my favorites for sure. I can now get them dried at my local market, and they are as flavorful as wild ones, a real suprise. Not quite as exciting as 'liperty cap stew', an old favorite recipee from the old days, but morels a real taste treat, if not mind candy, and look like little ground score brains on a stem.
Morrells are great, but so are chantrelles. Actually, I guess I like most of the "exotic" ones (not the "funny" ones). I don't think I'd ever try picking my own though, just because of the chance of mis-identifying one of the deadly ones.
I really enjoy morels. Just look out for the little white worms that live in the holes of the mushroom. Actually, don't look out for them because you eat them along with the mushroom anyway!
Never had one. Are they only wild, or can I find them in the grocery store? Im a big fan of shrooms. Id have to say portobellas are my favorite (Ill update you after I try the Morrell).
You can get them in stores, upscale and Italian. They are dried and small but make one helluva pasta sauce, cream or tomato based. not cheap but worth it.
Man, this takes me back! Some of my best memories are me and my grandpa going in the woods after some "hickory chickens". (We also called them dry-land fish).
2WISE4AGM-- how do you cook them up when you get them? We always just washed 'em, sliced 'em up longwise and rolled them in cornmeal and pan fried them in butter. YUM!! Wish I could get my hands on some now!
RMWADE- We cook them up the same way. Has anyone ever heard of freezing them so you could eat them later? A buddy of mine was telling me that you could do it, but I had never heard of this.
I remember my grandfather froze , dried and canned them But I don't remember how he canned them, just that he sliced them in half and canned them, he would use them to (and the juice) to make a killer mushroom chowder. greens! urgh.
