If it wouldn't make the computer go completely insane, I would throw a turbo on my 4.9 and call it a day. But in the real world, there are no truly affordable ways around the SD system!

All depends on how much boost.
The guy I talked to said he ran 12psi on his stock 4.9 with only an fmu and an MSD 6btm. I asked if he had isolated boost from the map sensor and he said yes (ford map don't like boost) so really all the ecu knew was zero vacuum and air temp.
If you wanted a reason to do a motor swap, this is it. Just that you get to have a lot of fun with your truck before the swap. Like I said before, if I had a 4.9, I'd boost it before I'd swap it.
To be honest with you, I am more interested in a 4bt swap than any other engine combination. I have a truck that is "perfect" for the swap. 4.9 engine, m5r2 trans, 3.55 gears.. If I could find a 4bt cummins for sale here for anything under $3k, I would already have it in the shop. But that is neither here nor there..
If you look hard enough in the Grumman aluminum bodied trucks, you'll find one wih a ford bellhousing bolt pattern (so I'm told)
Id do the swap as well, but my grandmother wouldn't be happy.
Not a bellhousing bolt pattern, but an adapter plate that would connect the 4bt to the smallblock trans. Truth of the matter is that there just aren't very many of those trucks here in South Eastern Nebraska..

Pretty ironic...Can't find a bread truck in America's Bread Basket......

Haha, good one! I tried to rep, but I have to spread it around...
I know where there are a couple being used as irrigation motors, but I'm not so sure I would want one of those engines for my DD pickup, considering they see some pretty brutal treatment running an irrigation pivot all summer long..
I would love to boost my 4.9...12 lbs of boost would be pretty wicked on the already-stout 6 popper...how do you isolate the boost from the MAP sensor? Just not run a hose to the sensor after the turbo? What did he use for intake? Got any pics of his setup by chance? What size snail did he use? I'd love to do this!

Turbo doesn't require an intake swap.
I'm pretty sure he used a turbo off a 6.5 gm. But The hx35 is a nicely sized turbo for a 5liter sized engine. it has a very nice exh housing for spool and it's a t3 flange.
To isolate the map you just put a check valve inline. But you then need to drill a super tiny bleed hole so that vacuum doesn't stay between the map and the check valve.
I'd say upgrade your intank fuel pump to a 190hp or 255hp walbro and get an fmu in the 8-1 size and plumb some exhaust. Lots of intercoolers will fit our old trucks with some thinking. Get a cheap bov off eBay and some piping. It's not that hard or expensive. Biggest cost is the MSD 6btm
Thanks bud...I was tired when I typed that...I meant exhaust manifold, not intake. Was it a custom piece...or somehow sourced from somewhere else? I would love to make this happen...
Aah. I getcha. Nope. I think he just piped his exhaust upwards off stock manifolds and into the turbo. It was quite the junkyard setup originally. There were other guys who've made log manifolds and header type turbo manifolds but the cheap guy didn't.
If you have acess to a water jet like me, and a good welder, it's easy to build a log manifold. Once I get my mill up and going I'm gonna produce a few "rare and crazy" items. Just because really. I have a blower intake for the 5.0-5.8 thought up already that I'm 1/3 done. Just need to find an alum welder cheap so I can continue.
