ECT diagnose

2000 F150 4x4 4.6L 95000 KM
Truck was running like a top then check engine lite and oil lite on. Oil gauge reads normal but temperature gauge at full hot but engine didn't overheat. The coolant was full ( no burping or steam from bottle and no leaks). Engine idled smooth but missed when under load. I got home and hooked my code reader up. Codes were P1285 (cylinder head over temperature condition) and P1299 (Cylinder head over temperature protection active) Freeze Frame- fuel system 1 closed loop ..ECT 258 F. The temperature reading would indicate a boil over but I drove 2km home without an overheat. To sum up I think the ECT has an open or short causing this. Any ideas or similar problem and fixes would be greatly appreciated. Also what do I have to remove to replace the ECT, which I believe is on the front left cylinder head (cannot physically see it)
P.S. I've had no fast idle on startup for a year (ECT?), new thermostat, IAC cleaned and temperature gauge read low for 8 months but started reading normal and now this problem.
Regards and thanks for any input, Gauge
