Aerostar A4LD
1990 Aerostar A4LD tranny slips. Does not slip if downshifted from overdrive to drive before coming to a stop. Then it upshifts perfectly when reaccelerating with the need to manually shift it back into overdrive. When starting from park, must shift it into Drive and not Overdrive and all works good. Haynes Repair Manual talks about Overdrive and Intermediate bands adjustment but doesn't talk about what the symptoms are if these are out of adjustment. Any enlightenment will be appreciated.

Other than the OD allows overdrive. When in D, the overdrive clutch is applied. This is not the overdrive band that creates the overdrive gear. I think there is a problem with slipping of the overdrive one way clutch. Confused yet? We have been talking about three seperate clutches in the overdrive section. Adjusting band will not solve your problem. If inclined this is a very easy transmission to work on if you do a partial rebuild. This is the first section that comes out and you do not need special tools.
