87 F150 Engine Pulling ... hints?
I ruined my 87 F150 5.0L EFI engine yesterday ... lost coolant and tried to make it to town. Runs ... but real rough now, had it hauled home ... would not want to take it more than 5 miles!
I've been meaning to replace the engine anyway.
ford-motors-engines.com has a LB for $1042 + $235 shipping
I can't complain ... 273,866 miles on the puppy.
Any hints on pulling the motor? I've done the water pump about 2 years ago, so I can get the goodies on the front off.
Mainly advice on the tranny, and exhaust ... I may have to cut the pipes after the headers ... they look pretty solidily stuck.
Any other things I should look at replacing while it's out?
Since the engine will be out, anyone know of a good place for a automatic transmission? might as well replace that too if I'm pulling the motor.
Thanks,

Stuff like: Water pump, power steering pump & gear box, HOSES, belts, thermostat, oil pump, gaskets...most stuff is so cheap it would be silly not to swap it out.
A good impact gun will loosen those bolts from the manifolds. Close your eyes since rust in your eye is no fun! From experience. Get some PB Penetrant or Liquid Wrench. Let is soak for at least an hour.
If you have an AOD...a good trans shop should be able to beef it up. Put on a big cooler, Trans-Go shift kit, "A" OD servo, aluminum 2-3 valve, hardened sprag, extra clutch in the direct drum, and probably the larger 2" OD band. That should be good to 500HP no problem. Any more you'll need special clutches & steels, billet shafts, and a low ratio gear set.
Hope that helps
