Question about spring mounts

My Dad doesn't think you could just bolt the spring mounts on. I would be using 9/16 grade 8 bolts with locking nut and washer.

Question about spring mounts

You will be fine as long as the hardware is quality and fits properly. Rivets are low quality metal according to George.

Question about spring mounts

I figured that since a punch will go through them easily but not a bolt.

Question about spring mounts

Nathan,

All the rivets in my frame were 3/8" diameter and I replaced them with 3/8-24 grade 8 bolts and nuts plus internal star lock washers under the nuts. I didn't realize the F-1 had fasteners as big as 9/16" diameter in the frame.

WRT the bolts vs. the rivets, grade 8 bolts and nuts have about 3 to 4 times the strength of the rivets and provide about 3 times the clamping force at recommended torque. The bolts probably have about the same fatigue strength as the rivets. It's a win situation all around with the bolts.

Question about spring mounts

I'm gonna enlarge the holes to fit 9/16 bolts. Since 1/2 is to small and 9/16 is slightly to big. With sizes I go by the head size since it gets confusing and when the hardware store has a wall covered with different bolts I will just find one with the right head size and length.
