1978 F-250 4x4 400M looks like it is leaking oil out of the inspection plate. The oil that is leaking out is black. Really black looks like clutch material. The clutch also slips when going up hill or with any load on it, especially in the rain. I have to keep topping up the Transmission oil so i dont think it is the rear seal. Any ideas?
i have the exact same problem im gonna replace the rear main you can do it threw the oil pan
It's a fun job but not impossible, losed the crankshft main bearing bolts to allow enough room to roll the old seal out and the new one in. If it's original it may come out in pieces , I used a welding rod to push the old one out. It needs to be able to bend around the crankshaft as you push the seal out. And you may or may not have to remove the oil pump to get the pan off.

Yep .... same as on my '69 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 / 4spd back in the early '70s was .....
You have a leaking seal on the transmission input shaft and oil is coming past it and spilling out the front of the tube that the throwout bearing slides on and dripping / spilling into the middle of the pressure plate / clutch and gravity takes it down all over the disc and flywheel and PP surfaces.
You'll need a input shaft seal that fits inside the front plate back near the mating surface where it bolts to the transmission and a clutch disc and some brake clean to clean up the flywheel and PP surfaces. Maybe get them resurfaced just slightly?
Leaks from rear main seals are usually just "messy" as there's a solid flywheel between the rear main seal / leaking oil ... and the clutch surfaces.
Thanks tbear853, looks like i have a bit of a long job ahead of me especially because it's about -10c hear but at least i have a idea now of the problem. I also read the thread about a slipping clutch that you posted on. This seems to be a common problem.
