Excursion/diesel newbie

I purchased a 2005 excursion 6.0l a couple months ago to replace a toyota suv to tote the family and a camper. I have been looking around here and have seen some really cool mods and gained a wealth of information.

A curiousity that I have is when it comes to mods/monitors it seems that there are all kinds of different mods/packages/pieces that look cool and claim to do similar things.

What might be "necessary" vs. "cool" to have.
I am a new diesel owner and looking to make the best use of this truck and help it to last for my family. the only mod that I have sierously considered is a reprogrammer-the sct flash tuner-but what might it be necessary to monitor(gauges etc) rather than what is just cool. I don't really want to have the truck looking too modded because it is kept in front of my house because they don't make garages big enough here for it and don't want to invite break-ins with a bunch of "cool" stuff.
I realize that there are many opinions as to cool and necessary but I want simple and functional.

Thanks in advance!!!!

I have an 05 as well. I have the SCT (custom tunes). I use the scan gauge II to monitor coolant / oil /trans/ temps.. It also does a bunch of other stuff. It's a good monitoring tool.

Welcome! It's a little overwhelming when you look through all the info and try to figure out what you need to to. The easiest and cheapest gauges/monitor would be to get a Scan Gauge II. There are others that like the Edge Insight product line, but a little more expensive. From there a SCT from Innovative Diesel with the custom tunes really wakes it up, but isn't "needed".

You'll find a bunch of info on "upgrading" the suspension on the Excursion. Many of us have found there is some steering wander with the stock setup and the front hits the bump stops. The fix invloves swapping springs, but I'll let you read up more if you are interested in it. The one suggestion I have is make sure you either have, or install a rear sway bar. It will greatly improve your handling.

Take a look in the tech folder of the 6.0 forum and you'll find lots of info. Many recomend changing the coolant to an ELC coolant to try to avoid having the oil cooler clog. There is tons more info there too.
