With that combo an 8" rear will hold up just fine. You could go with a 9", but if the 302 is stock or mild the 8" will suffice, and might a bit cheaper than the 9". If you go with the 9" one from a 60s or 70's F100 will be pretty much a bolt in.
Thanks, I got the motor/transmission from a donor 1973 mavervick. Just fixing up to drive locally. The truck was my grandfather's. My father was the last to drive the truck in 1964. The truck is in really great shape for the years it sat out in my dad's pasture. When I get to the 25 posts I'll start showing pics....
Also, the maverick axle is too narrow to use, so will have to locate another. From what I have read, the stock axle would be to low geared for my set-up.
I found a 1996 ford explorer rear end cheap today. That means I will have rear disk brakes. The axle was only 1/4" narrower than the axle that was on the truck. I'll now buy a disk brake conversion for the front end.
Explorer rear end will work fine, and converting the front to the same 5x4.5" bolt pattern will allow a wide array of wheels. But going to discs all around means changing the master cylinder and stuff, too. Such a vicious cycle, lol.
Not too sure, but I think discs were pretty much made to be power assisted. I can't recall seeing a manual brake setup that was disc from the factory.....
The stock axle isn't stock.... Don't know where my grandfather came up with the rear end that is in it. The main reason is I want to go with a different bolt pattern.
67-71 f100 will bolt straight in with minimal mods. Did it in mine. Works great we even fliped the axle over the srpinga got five inches of. drop. And it keep stock bolt pattern
