I have this posted in the tranny section also, but I need responses from those who dont look there.
I have a C6 trans with a ribbed bell housing. I was told it is a HD trans,But I am not sure. I need to know if this came in cars or trucks, and if it is an HD trans...what makes it so special?
The yoke is attatched and the tail shaft is kinda short
The C-6 was first offered in 1966 and was still in production at least until '96...maybe still is. It was Ford's standard three speed heavy duty auto tranny, found in larger cars and trucks, usually behind bigger V-8 engines.
As Billy says, there were several changes over the years, but all C-6's are bullet proof. Basically, all the internal parts, clutches, bands, shafts, and the planetary assembly were built with more beef!
There was a small block C-6 built for a while that fit smaller V-8's, but they are getting rare. It's an excellent 3 speed, though it takes a bit more power to operate then...say a C-4.
