My 93 f150 4.9 started ticking today but goes away when it warms up its got 202,000 miles oil change is due should I worry or just change oil and drive? Should I switch to synthetic?
theres alot of controversy over the whole synthetic thing. some may say that the thinner synthetic oil will clean out the crud that could be holding your engine together and leak out of worn gaskets. personally, i never use synthetic in my truck. is the oil level low? change the oil and see what happens. maybe sneak a little oil stablizer in there, too.
Before you change the oil, put a can of seafoam in the oil and run it for about 20-30 miles.
Change the oil to 10-30 and see how it sounds. It's getting cold out so a little ticking at startup is ok. But ticking until oil is 80-100 degrees is a little worrisome.
If it still ticks after 100-150 miles or so then add a quart of marval mystery oil (it's ok for it to be overfull a little) and run it like that for a while. It won't hurt it any.
i had gotten the same noise from my 4.9 years back. i put some of that rislone i believe its was. anyway the ticking went away. next time i changed the oil i added it again. ive changed the oil a few time since and havent added any and its still quite.ive used synth oil since i bought my truck, it better oil, and my truck doesnt use any oil so i figured why not use the better stuff. ive got 175 thousands on mine.
