Just wanted to share my experience as of late. 2005 F-350 CC 4WD 89K, Rotella 5W-40 Synthetic oil.
We have had some cold weather, last night into the single digits and with wind, even colder. I have a block heater connected to a timer. It is set to turn on at 1am.
I leave for work at about 6:15am. Block heater warmed the engine (according to my edge) to 100F. Truck started immediately and warmed fairly well.
I will be changing my thermostat this weekend due to some troubleshooting I did with the help of some knowledgable folks on this site. That will only help the operation of the cooling system!
Anyway, just thought that if there were those with questions about cold weather starting in combination with oil type and block heater use, this may be of some assistance!
Good cold weather performance is all in the preparation. I use Amsoil 10w30 full synthetic, a block heater and a garage. Someone asked about fuel additives on another page. I use HOWES fuel treatment/anti gel additive, LUCAS 10020 for upper cylinder lubrication and injector cleaner and that's all. Never had a concern with cold weather starts. Last winter I went in the ditch in a storm. The truck set there for three days (-15 to -20 degrees) until I could get it dug out. Snow EVERYWHERE! Got it out, cleared the snow from the engine compartment and it started right up first try.
Right now my F350 is setting in the shed, with my 5th wheel camper, back in Iowa waiting for spring to arrive. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Winter sucks! My 5vr is stored too! Come on spring!
I wanted to bring the camper to Arizona with me this winter but my daughter insisted I stay with her and her family. Love them bunches but.... Next year it won't go into storage, I'll bring it with me. Independence becomes more important the older I get! I guess I'll officially become a "snowbird". I think it'll be better for my F350 not to be in storage also.
raptor131, I'm jealous!! The wife and I spent three months this last summer camping and loved every moment. We lost the awning twice to storms in Missouri about three weeks apart. The second time we lost it, sent us home for some much needed repairs and replenishment.
