Hey guys, I'm new to this whole van thing but I'm planning on doing a huge road trip this summer. Im hoping to go coast to coast in Canada, somewhere around 7500 kilometres ( 4500 miles? ) towing a tandem axle camper trailer with a diesel van. Ive narrowed it down to a mid to late 90s E350 with the 7.3. Im looking for your input on the vehicle because I dont want to have any break downs. Any specific years I should look for? Prefered axle ratios, trannys? Also what kind of milage could a person expect? Thanks guys!
1999.5-2003 are the preferred years to choose from.
Axle ratio for towing, some say no less then 373s but I did just fine with 355.
the 4R100 is a fine trans but needs to be cooled better then the stock system can do, many say the trans cooler from the 6.0 PSD works great and needs only small mods to fit.
As for mpg, my old 2000 PSD Van did very well, I used to get up to 22mpg at hwy speed and up to 15mpg hwy towing my 7500 lb TT.
But now since I have a 2005 V10 van, I really would lean towards that VS the Diesel. Blasphemy I know. but the V10 and the awesome 5R100 is a match made in heaven. The operating cost of the 7.3 VS V10 is way cheaper.
Hey Harris, the price split between gas and diesel is increasing and from what I see it diesel getting near 20 cents a litre more expensive than gas. This will only increase as oil goes up.
The USA is now exporting gasoline as they are refining more than we consume and this is dropping the price of gas, but diesel is directly connected to oil prices. So gas will now be cheaper than diesel.
BUT, if you can map out the Native reserves and find out if they sell dyed diesel you will get a great bargoon, as Eddy Shack would say!!
