Coolant leak-need help identifying part

96 Explorer, there is a vaccuum controlled valve on the hoses that go to the heater core, about a foot and a half from the fire wall. What is this valve for? It leaks coolant when the vaccuum pulls the valve up, when I disconnect the vaccuum hose, it quits leaking. I have to take it on a trip tomorrow morning, and was wondering if it would be ok to leave it disconnected until I finish the trip. Quick help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, answered my first question alone. It is the heater control valve. So if I disconnect the vaccuum, everything should be fine until I get a new valve, right?

just replace the valve I bought one about three months ago cause the valve was leaking on my spark plug wires and caused a check eng. light. The valve cost me $15.00.

The 3-way vacuum controlled valve is the heater core bypass. It bypasses flow to the heater core when in air conditioning mode.

I'm also having this problem and want to replace the heater control valve. Seems fairly straight-forward but will it leak coolant everywhere once I take the hoses off? Any tips?
