Did you check the owners manual to see if you need to replace the fluid??

How many miles are on it??

You may be replacing it for nothing if it doesn't get abused..

I've got just over 66K on it, mileage wise I know it doesn't need to be changed. I'm changing it out b/c of its age and the fact that it's a bit foamy, has me concerned that there is some water in there.....

I use black for things like that. The reason being, it tacks up faster than blue or red, plus it handles the heat so much better.

I use it more time than not, as long as you don't over smear it, it's all good.

When I had my axle seals replaced the Ford garage used a sealant on my rear diff. cover.

Still bumming around the house as it is now up to 31*, but still have a wind chill in the upper teens.

My lappy is saying 26* right now, but those temps come from the Brookhaven Lab, which is on much higher ground. We normally will be 4-6 degrees colder then that.

Good afternoon, New York. I caught a break in between afternoon jobs.

John, when I had to go into my 1/2 ton differential, I purchased a gasket to go with the new cover. A stinking, messy job none the less.

Good luck,

-JR

Besides being pissed that it only lasted 23 years...

I got the truck up on stands on Sunday during the sunny part of the day. My wife was handing me tools so I did not need to crawl in and out. Tried to use the dead blow hammer while she attempted to start the truck. No joy.

Then I decided that the starter had to be removed. So, she fed me the tools while I was under there. I spent almost an hour on it, and I could not get the bolts to budge; even after spraying them. When my hands became numb, I gave up.

I removed the stands, and had the wife and kids push me into the street. Got it pop started down the hill, and took it to a shop. It makes me sad for a simple repair, but it is too cold, and I am too old.
