I'm looking to buy a 91 F250 with 7k miles on a rebuilt 302, the truck has about 92k miles on it. That means the engine only lasted about 85k miles before it needed to be rebuilt, is that pretty standard and if so, that's kind of crappy.
I posted in the newer truck section on what people think that the overall reliability of the 91 F250 is. My buddy says that it has a built up car tranny in it, is that true?? How in the heck would they justify that stupidity? (if true)
It is strictly a function of maintenance. If the last time the oil was changed in the engine was the first time and the previous owner beat the hell out of it, 85K was quite an achievement. My dad, on the other hand, changed the oil in the 302 in his '90 every 3000 miles religiously and made sure that all the other consumables were attended to on a regular basis. He traded it at 185K and it still ran strong. It had never even had it's valve covers off. The average 302 is good for around 125-150K with a good maintenance schedule.
i blew up my 302 in my towncar with 203k miles on it....the thing probably would have lasted quite a while if i hadn't tried doing a breakstand on a cold motor when the temp outside was 15 below......
yeah..... I wouldnt think that would be very smart.... I have a 77 302 it has 180k on the truck and the engine was rebuilt once and that was 8k miles ago... and I guess it ran great befor the PO did the rebuild... Mainly because the block sat for 14 years outside and all of the seals swelled up, (somone told me that was a good thing, because when they swell up it makes it so there are no oil leaks) ? But the owner had 88k on it and he let it sit for 14 years and then drove it untill he decided to rebuild it... and then drive it for 8k and sell it to me. If you think your engien needs a rebuild do a compression test... and if it is below par, and you find out your rings are bad... you might as well do a rebuild.
