My 2.8l v6 1883 ranger has, after leaving the house(or anywhere else after letting it sit), sputtered, dropped below idle speed and shut off every time I start driving after it sat for over about 10 hours. It will start right up and seems to drive relatively ok when in gear, but will keep doing this for about 15-20 min, and then not do it again until after sitting for a long time.
Since i got it, i have had the caurberator adjusted, choke checked and adjusted, valves adjusted and vacume systems checked(all of em). Nothing helped. I think it may be electrical, and since the alternator is weak (lights dim when idleing at night) im going to check on that very soon. If you have any other ideas thatd be great!
thanks,
Paul
Make sure you try a new fuel filter. I once had one that would clog with debris then after I let her sit it would settle and i could drive it till it clog again.
also check and make sure your grounds are good the strap from the engine to the firewall and the battery to the block. A bad ground could be your trouble
If it has a TFI ignition, I'd check out the pickup inside the dist. They are noted for becoming temp sensitive and quitting. The windings inside apparently become open and then as the temp changes they can connect back up.
Does sound like an electrical problem to me...

Thanks for the replies, i already changed the fuel filter about a month ago and it didnt help, and im not sure about the ignition but ill check inside the distributor, it always starts up, it just idles rough and shuts off for the first about 20 min after a night of not sitting. Last night i charged the battery all night but i didnt check the water in it so it could be weak, because it didnt shut off soon on my way to school as it usually does, the alternator is probably really weak.
It does run perfectly when it is warm, well at least very nicely.
ps even after the truck is completly warmed up it has shut off in the middle of the day for no reason, but not often. (warmed up is according to the temp gauge on the dash.)
If it was the tfi do you know if it would shut off the first time i drive it for the day every time? Thats what it does, for like 20 min (which is past when the engin reads "warm") and then it starts working perfectly, and it hasnt really shut off any time other than the first time i drive it for the day for a couple weeks.
I adjusted the choke really high one morning and it was ideling on the high step and i had just stopped at a corner to listen to it and it just started sputtering and died, while still on the high step. Like usual it started up immediately, but when i reved it up it was very seperated sounding, like the cylinders wernt firing perfectly or something. I was going to replace the alternator, but have no idea, please tell me what you think!
