6.9 question...

are the rockers adjustable like on a gas engine or is it all in the lifters?

also...if you have to tear the whole left side of the engine apart just to get the valve cover off, wait...i still cant get it off, the heater core is in the way! WTF!!!???

Remove the hard line from the mechanical lifter pump on the bottom of your vacuume pump that goes to the fuel filter, remove the fuel filter housing with filter attached be carefull not to spill, remove the heater core hoses remove the valve cover on the passenger side should be able to shimmy it out. Not sure if you can adjust the rockers I never have had to do it.

yeah...i have the alternater and vacuume pump off, as well as my whole banks turbo intake. the only thing now, is, i have to shimmy the valve cover off.

the problem is...i have a loud clack like a rocker arme slapping around. so im tearing it appart to see if i have a bad lifter, but all of the lifters seem to be holding pressure

No the lifters ar not adjustable on these engines. That slap sound could be a bad rocker. The design of the 6.9 rockers was not that great, it would allow them to get sideways when they wore out. The 7.3 rockers are a direct bolt on replacement and have a far better design.

Well...i think the sound is caused by a lack of oil at the top of the engine.

While running there was absolutly no oil pumping out of the push rods.

So i think its my oil pump

Do you have a factory gauge on it? If so tee under the sender or just unhook it and put a mechanical gauge on it to see what kinda oil pressure it has. Mine sits at about 50psi a when cold and at anything above idle. it runs about 25psi at idle when at operating temp.

Ok. But what else could cause no oil at the top of the engine?

Plugged oil passages and or plugged pushrods. If the pressure is that low it may have caused some damage if you been running her.

Well it is most likely the pump but I always check things like this first. Would be a shame to put a pump in it and that not be the problem.

You can get it out but it is a pain. You have to lift the engine off the mounts as high as you can without jamming or breaking anything up top. The cross members are rivoted in on these trucks. Most guys, including me would find it easier to just pull the engine lol.

LOL! could be in my shoes man. I have a hoist but no garage or even flat ground to work on. I hydrolocked mine this past spring and had to pull the head in the driveway. That sucked, but I got thru it. If you get the engine up and the pan down enough you can most likely pull the oil sump tube off the pump then pull the pump. I have done this on several gasser 4x4's over the years. It can be a real pita but is doable. Good luck man!
