If you have the ability and funds, i would switch to a mechanical fuel pump. You should see a port blocked off on the front of the engine by the water pump that the fuel pump goes into. Sounds like you'll have to drop the tanks anyway if you are going to replace the in-tank fuel pumps. Mechanical seems to be better for a carburetor system as you don't have to worry about fuel return and the 1406 does not have a fuel return port. Just my .02.

It was my understanding that on my setup I already have a mechanical fuel pump along with the two electric pumps, or am I wrong?? Also, I know you recently got a 1406, how is that working for you, any issues thus far? I was looking to get a setup similar to yours with the intake and carb because A) I don't want any vacuum leaks. and B) I want something user friendly since I am new to carbs.

You will be the best person to be able to answer that.

To my knowledge, the factory always installed one or the other, never both at the same time.

But, some owners do things....

Two pictures....

One showing where the mechanical fuel pump goes, the other showing such a pump installed (both with orange arrows).

Look at the LH front of your engine down by where the lower radiator hose connects and figure out if you have a pump there or not.

From what I can see, it definitely has a mechanical fuel pump. Also, when it was running I never heard any electric pumps turning on when I turned the ignition so I'm thinking it's mechanical, so I don't have to worry about fuel return, which is a relief.

I love the 1406. No issues at all yet. I am going to set the idle and mixture this weekend with a vacuum gauge (the way it's supposed to be done) as right now I did it by RPM alone. Couldn't tell you as of yet what my mileage is as I haven't driven it much yet. But, starting, idling and acceleration are sooooooo much better than with the Holley.

As for the fuel pump, it will be fairly obvious if you have a mechanical one. If you have a plate there instead you have electric pumps. I like mechanical much better than electric because you have one point of failure instead of 2 (or more). Just throwing it out there.

Good to hear about the 1406, I think I'm going to go ahead and order the carb and intake today so hopefully I can get working soon. Did you use any spacers between the carb and intake?

I ordered the heat insulating gasket from Edelbrock. That's the only spacer I've used.
