OK so we have >180k on the '97 now and I am thinking it is time to replace the starter.
Searched the forums and found that it appears many recommend a 2-bolt starter for an '02 SD as a replacement, with the only mod being the slight opening up of one of the terminals on the existing wires to fit onto one of the posts on the starter.
What I am wondering is if there is a preferred brand? I see many complaints about Advanced Auto starters. I know the parts man at the dealer and he usually gives me shop price for parts (<list).
Are the Motorcraft grinders as good as any aftermarket ones?
I don't have an O'reilly's anywhere near me, as far as I know. Do have a NAPA not too far away.
I'd like to do this once and do it right, so I am open to any recommendations/experiences you folks have had.

Thanks in advance for your insight!
I need to do mine too.
but my radiator, water pump, thermostat, block heater and oil cooler are a bit more important at this moment.
I just installed a new starter from Advance Auto Parts. I bought it for $199. It had one brand name on it, Remy I think. Even so, I was told that the starter was made by Denso I think it was. Anyhow I bought the one for the 97'. I have 180,000 miles on my truck as well. I like the way my truck comes to life real quick now.
I think "Mean Green" sells one for 400 bucks but that was way out of my budget range.
There is a good shop north of Pittsburgh that rebuilds both starters and Alternators. You might want to check them out if you are interested. Send me a PM and I'll get you their name and phone number.
