"off the thermostat housing"? Do you mean the vacuum tree in the intake? If they are in the thermostat housing your problem is coolant in the vacuum lines Other wise, if there are ANY open hose barbs allowing vacuum leaks, it will affect the way the engine idles, runs, performs, etc.. Any of those "nips"/hose barbs are open, you will need to get them plugged somehow.

That's a thermal vacuum valve screwed into the thermostat housing, and if there's no line going to it from the carb/intake, then it's NOT a vacuum (or coolant) leak. Look for open vacuum ports on the carb & the intake & plug THOSE - they're the only "leaks". Once you have it sorted out, try to put the vacuum system back the way it goes - use the map on the emissions sticker, or these.

can't I just remove this unit and swap it with one that does'nt have all those ports on it. and my carb doesnt have any more vacum lines goin to it. I'm going to have a look at the emission sticker today and see if that will help. but if you guys cone up with anything let me no thanks.

You mean change the thermostat housing to one with no port for the TVV? Why? Just ignore it for now. It's not hurting anything. And if you ever decide to make everything work again (which I recommend), it'll be right there waiting for you.
