for the upper balljoint retaining nut on a 75 Bronco Dana44.
I know it's somewhere between 1 1/4" and 1 1/2", but no clue which
I'm guessing 1 7/16? or 1 3/8?
Also, what's the easiest way to break the seal on a 9" rear so I can remove the 3rd member?
If you get no response by tonight on the nut size, I'll check mine at home.
As for the 3rd member, I used a flat prybar VERY CAREFULLY to pry mine off. Just be careful not to damage the mating surfaces ot bolt threads.
You could also bolt a pipe on the yoke with the u-bolts for the u-joints, and try to work it up and down/side tp side. Again, be carefull not to damage the yoke.
somebody said that 1 5/16" sounded right, but wasn't sure.
So I went out and got a 1 5/16" and 1 3/8" socket. One of the 2 better work!
I'll see what I can do for removing the 3rd member that way. I got a couple other responses like taking a rubber mallet and beatin the hell out of the 3rd member.
Put a floor jack under it and take the pressure off the retaining studs. Then take a screw driver and use it to start a prying action near the top of the housing. Remember, you are not doing it to pry the 3rd member off! Just driving the screw driver in enough to break the seal around the edges. If you use the screw driver to pry you will either mark the mating surface or break something. The floor jack is to just take pressure off, not to lift the 3rd member.
