Dose any one have any advice/ tips on what to use to transport a motor in the back of a truck? Ive got a 93 daktoa to carry a 300 straight 6 home for my Ford and was wondering if there were any tips or things i should do to secure thing into my truck, i have about 225 miles to drive with it in the back end and any suggestions on what has worked for you guys in the past would be great thanks ryan
Use some scrap 2x4's etc to make a cradle for the engine. Use chains and tie down straps to keep it from moving. Snug it up to the front of the bed. You can usually control how fast you accelerate (unless you are 17) but you can't always control how fast you stop...
I've seen them sitting in a used tire, without rim of course. It provides cushion and some stability. You should still use safety straps though, can't ever be too careful.
Junk tire w/no rim does work the best IMHO. If you can position it in a way to get some tiedowns around it (maybe slide it into a bed corner) that makes it even better.
I work a a salvage yard and every time a customer buys an enginge we just set it on a junk tire. You might want to find a little bigger and stiffer tire since you are putting a straight 6 on it. They are a little bit heavier. Us tie down straps too.
I transported a 460 with the tranny attached in the back of a small Ranger. I picked it up in Millwaukee, sat it on the tires, tied it in, and drove back to STL with no problems.
I lay plywood down under the tire/engine. Just makes any spillage easier to clean up, not to mention making it easier to slide the engine out of the truck later (tires grip my bedliner like it was nailed to it.)
Morning all, just surfing and happened to see this subject line. I had the same problem as you rscritch. I now make stands just for that purpose to sell.......but I don't have one designed for the 300 I-6 yet I do make them though for most all Ford V-8,2.3 I-4, and some others. Good luck.
I transported a 300 I6 awhile back in my Ranger. I turned it sideway's in the front of the bed and strapped it securely. I should also mention that I put brace block's between the box and the engine to prevent damage to the back glass. Went nearly 90 mile's with no problem's.
